Formed in 2002, 66e (formerly ‘The 66 electric’) are a 5-piece with members hailing from Dublin and Scotland. 66e have just released their debut album, “fall down seven times, stand up eight”
After a year spent gigging, rehearsing and writing, 2002 produced ‘The 66 Electric’s’ first release, the critically acclaimed ‘I died in a movie’ EP. It featured ‘Brown Bear’, voted one of the songs of the year by the listeners of Phantom FM. The EP also reached No. 1 in the Tower Records single chart.

Great Irish 80’s/90’s indie band although they achieved little comercial success did have some great tunes and had a few minor hits with “Endless Art” and "Take It Easy on Me".Often touring and recording with Edywn Collins the band shared a lot of similarities with him.

The Blades

Fronted by Paul Cleary in the late 70’s/Early 80’s The Blades along with U2 were the heart of the Dublin music scene. U2 went on to become purveyors of mindless stadium rock and sell millions of albums while the Blades well didn’t. They did manage to release some of the finest new-wave pop tunes of the time.

An Emotional Fish

Derided at the time as a U2 cover band origonly being on U2’s label and touring with them didn’t help.
But their debut album was pretty good follow up albums wernt as good though former member Gerry Fish has had some succes recently with his lounge band the Mudbug club but I prefer to remember him as a member of AEF.

The Pogues
One of the best bands Ireland ever produced (although granted most of them were born in England) Mixing folk with a rebellious drunken attitude they made some of the best records of the 80’s before eventulay self destructing. Now front man MacGowan is a pathetic figure rarely comprehensible and still struging badly with his drink/drug problems and the band constantly reform for money spinning gigs dispite being finished as a creative force many years ago but they once were a great band.

Another sort of Microdisney offshoot front man Mick Lynch was in Microdisney in the very early days, Stump however don’t sound a lot like his fellow corkmen although appearing on the famous C86 NME cassette that gave name to the jangally indie pop genre of the time Stump they didn’t sound a lot like other bands of that genre mixing weird arrangements and melodies with even weirder lyrics the band only recorded one album “A Fierce Pancake” but it’s a cracker of an album

Therapy?
Formed in 1989 in belfast during their early days they were touted a an Irish Nirvana , in fact rumour has it Cobains famous striped jumper was bought by Courtny Love off Therapy? front man Andy Cairns after a show when therapy? Suported nirvana. they weren’t a nirvana copycat at all tough just had a lot of the same influences (Big Black, Killing Joke) after 2 great very noisy ep’s (Babbyteeth and Pleasure Death) they relesed their debut album Nurse again an extremely noisy affair it sold moderaly well Its follow up Troublegum was very polished by comparision but had a rake of great tracks on it and sold over a million copies in many ways their early album pattern was a lot like nirvanas noisey messy promising debut followed by polised crossover album and then 3rd dark destory your fan base third album the difference being after Infernal Love Cairns didn’t top himself although listening to the album you sometimes wonder how its almost relentless in its misery but still a great album 4th album semi detaced was decent but then they decended into mediocrity with their last few piss-poor knuckle dragging metal by numbers.
Still they were a very good band back in the day.

Thin Lizzy
After U2 Thin Lizzy are probably Irelands best known rock band unlike U2 some of their stuff is quite good. What can I say about this band, formed in 1988 with members from Dublin and Kildare the band started out as a deritivite(but still quite good) shoe gazing band before creating the greatest rock album of all time “Heartworm” never achieved the succes they deserved and split up before their third album was released although it did get a release in 2000 they have recently refored though and new material is one the way apparently.
